Squirrel pelts
Our Squirrel pelts are superb quality. They are imported from Russia and the North
of Europe and are grays. Imported from Novgorod as far back as the 11thC Squirrel
was a huge commodity. Brought in by their thousands and initially a very high class
fur. By the late 13thC to early 14thC they had fallen out of favour for items such
as Lynx, Polecat and Mink.
Originally called Vair, the lighter underbelly was highly
prized and was known as minivair. The fur trade and the the Furriers Guild of
Britain was founded on the trade of squirrel pelts.
